This season of the Premier League has championed the art of thoughtful spending—and, in the case of Nottingham Forest, a bold gamble that’s clearly paying off. It’s a campaign that has seen many pundits predicting the decline of the coveted Big 6, that elite group of clubs with seemingly endless resources, the power to lure the world’s best talent, and iconic, gargantuan stadiums that double as tourist attractions.
There’s no denying the clear underperformance of some of the league’s usual heavyweights. Sure, Liverpool is charging headstrong through the season, and Arsenal continues to hold their ground with determination. Even title defenders Manchester City, despite hitting a rough patch, are still performing well enough to stay in the race for European competition slots. But then there’s Chelsea. While they briefly flirted with the idea of challenging for the title, it’s safe to say we can knock them off that list—at least for now.
Let’s not talk about United for now, I have already written about them. Let’s talk about the horror show at Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou hasn’t had an easy season this season. The Injury crisis is serious in Tottenham, and the heavy weights like Son and James Maddison being out of form. While Ange’s high intensity tactics have helped Tottenham win in big numbers and have a positive goal difference, the number of losses completely outweigh them. With the recent loss against relegation battlers, Leicester City, it’s safe to say, pressure is high on Ange.
In his defense, the team feels lost. The defense is very hollow and we see a very inconsistent mid field line. And while Ange’s High defensive pressing strategy works in certain ways, but in a very tactically oriented league with heavy emphasis on counter attack, it just falls apart. Is this a new challenge for Ange after dominating the Scottish league? yes, but there are a lot of factors that are hurting him
Many of the fans have now turned their vitriol towards the management headed by Daniel Levy (of ENIC). Since the take over, the club has won a single trophy ( i. e the elusive League Cup of 2008). And while they had their tides, like coming close to winning the league in 2016, and the Champions League Finals of 2019 (both under Pocchetino), the club’s financial prowess is nothing in comparison to a barren trophy shelf in the last few years. It also doesn’t help that they have lost several of their many talismen, like Harry Kane, hands down their best player in this era. If we look back, you got legends like Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, who would go on to win more titles as a player than the club has ever won in its life time.
But for now, the club is beaten down, with only a few points away from the relegation mark. And at this point, they are just last but one on the form table.
